The Sentinel Echo: District recognizes reading gains, board

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Linda Vinson of the Elgin Foundation presented the 2012-2013 report on improved reading skills of students in grades K-3 to the Board of Education Monday. Vinson said the district has a great chance of bringing 90 percent of students up to reading on grade level by the end of the next nine weeks of school.

So far, K-3 students received an 8 percent gain, reaching 64 percent of students now reading on grade level.

Elgin’s pursuit of reaching students who struggle in reading reaches far across nine school districts. Forty-five schools are participating in the initiative, including Laurel County.
