Knoxville News Sentinel: Susan Richardson Williams wields power in business and politics

When vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan announced plans to visit Knoxville for a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser, Susan Richardson Williams signed on to sell tickets for the event. The Republican political activist and public relations consultant, who supported Mitt Romney in the primary, easily exceeded her $10,000 obligation, raising more than four times that amount in connection with the Thursday luncheon. “It does say a lot about the campaign. There’s a real enthusiasm. I’m excited about the Romney-Ryan ticket and probably worked a little extra,” said Williams, who serves on the state finance committee for Romney’s presidential bid. It also says a lot about Williams, a sought-after political pundit whose competitive drive and desire to deliver results for things she’s passionate about — including the Republican Party, the state of Tennessee, the University of Tennessee and environmental conservation — have been a hallmark of her 40-year career. A visit to her downtown Knoxville office serves as a visual history, with photos of Williams with presidents, governors, congressmen and, yes, Hank Williams Jr. She’s been to the Bush compound at Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport, Maine; she’s flown on Air Force Two; and she has visited the White House many times, including with the Lady Vols, who clinched two national titles while Williams worked in women’s athletics at UT. Knoxville News Sentinel: Tennessee GOP likes Romney’s choice

WASHINGTON — Of all the people Mitt Romney could have picked to be his running mate for vice president, the one who excited Susan Richardson Williams the most was U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan. “What I like about him is he has really been a leader in the House — he has put forth ideas and not just rhetoric,” said Williams, a Knoxville resident who will be an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention later this month in Tampa. “I think the country is really hungry for ideas and someone who has solutions,” Williams said. Knoxville News Sentinel: Carly Harrington: SRW adds a male affiliate to its ranks

Eight years ago, a half-dozen women in public relations joined forces to launch SRW & Associates, an association of independent professionals working together. While the faces over the years have changed, its affiliates have always been female. Until now. Clay Crownover recently moved to Knoxville with his family from Washington D.C., where he spent the last decade working in the political, nonprofit and government relations arena. “We liked him, but more importantly we thought he was a good fit with what we do,” said Susan Williams of SRW, touting Crownover’s experience on Congressional Hill and his background in clean energy. “We’re continuously looking for people who complement us and who don’t compete against us.” Crownover, an Auburn University graduate who describes himself as a moderate Democrat, aims to provide strategic communications and political consulting through his business, CFC Strategies. The 33-year-old hopes to focus his work on energy efficiency and education as well as obesity and physical fitness in Tennessee. “I knew there was a connection in the way we saw things despite the gender and political affiliations,” he said. This is Crownover’s second time around in Knoxville. Read the full...
