Travelocity’s Red Hat Promotion in Times Square, New Years Eve
To promote a Travelocity trip giveaway and further Travelocity’s Roaming Gnome brand recognition, Erin Leaverton developed a grassroots campaign that involved giving away 20,000 pointy red roaming gnome hats in Times Square on New Year’s Eve for a chance to win a trip to Monte Carlo. Travelocity also hired individuals to wear bodysuits and the pointy red hats to promote the campaign’s message: “The only thing you need to wear this New Year’s Eve is a pointy red hat.” The hats and “streakers” leveraged national media coverage, online buzz and were even picked up by Fox and Friends and the Today Show. One hat was sold on eBay. Return on the investment was estimated to be 10 times the cost.
